The Deadline Club knows this is a hard time for our members. Between layoffs, furloughs, pay cuts and tight budgets, journalists have been hit hard by changes in the industry—and even more so now during a time when our services are especially in need.
We want to do our part to help. Moved by our friends at SPJ Oregon and SPJ Florida, The Deadline Club launched its own Helping Hand Fund, a small grant program giving $250 to to local SPJ members who have faced financial hardships this year because of newsroom changes. A limited number of grants will be issued on a rolling basis. Eligibility limited to SPJ members who live within the New York City metropolitan area, which includes all campuses within a 50-mile radius of Columbus Circle. Preference will be given to SPJ members who are also Deadline Club members.
How to Apply
- Applicants must be members of The Deadline Club. We will need your membership number. You can find that on your SPJ membership card or via SPJ.org.
- Fill out the Helping Hand application, which asks for specifics of your financial hardship.
- The loss must have occurred in 2020 to be considered.
- Members of the Deadline Club Board of Directors, or their relatives, are not eligible to apply. This includes officers and those on the executive council, advisory committee and professional council.
