NEW YORK, NY, May 2019 – The Deadline Club is pleased to announce that Georgia Mavromihalis, journalism teacher and yearbook adviser at Benjamin N. Cardozo in Bayside, Queens, is the 2019 recipient of The Robert Greenman Award for High School Journalism Teaching and Advising.
The award, along with a video honor, was presented at the Deadline Club’s annual journalism awards dinner on Monday, May 20 in New York City.
Mavromihalis advised the award-winning student newspaper, The Verdict, for 17 years and now advises the Nexus, the school yearbook. Under her leadership the yearbook completely transformed from a book of pictures to a book that told the stories of the senior class.
“Students learn a lot by telling stories and reporting them,” says Mavromihalis, who has been teaching for 24 years. Last year she was a finalist for the Big Apple teaching award.
A Certified Journalism Educator, Mavromihalis takes professional development seriously; she attended programs taught by the Journalism Education Association, American Society of News Editors and the NYC High School Journalism Collaborative. Within Benjamin Cardozo High School, she is fierce advocate for journalism. Because of her leadership, the school will include two journalism studios in the new school annex.
Her students, who call her Ms. M, are inspired and pushed by her dedication. “She was the one that really made me believe in myself that I could pursue this, that it wasn’t just a hobby for me,” says Barnard student and Cardozo alumna Juliana Kim.
“Georgia’s passion for learning and dedication to her journalism students showcases a an important element of the Deadline Club’s commitment to growing the next generation of journalists,” said Katina Paron, executive council member and NYC High School Journalism Collaborative adviser.
