Application Guidelines
The Deadline Club, the New York City chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, invites students to apply for our annual scholarships. Two scholarships of at least $1,000 each will be awarded. The winner will be a guest of the Deadline Club at the annual spring dinner in Manhattan. Journalism and communications professionals will judge the entries. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence, student performance in journalism, career potential, and service to SPJ or commitment to its mission. Judges reserve the right to withhold an award if they decide no applicant merits recognition. The decision of the judges is final.Who Is Eligible
Undergraduate and graduate students majoring in print or broadcast journalism, new media, or the communications fields at area schools with campus chapters of SPJ (Columbia University, Fordham University, Long Island University, New York University and St. John’s University, CUNY), as well as current student members of the Deadline Club majoring in these fields, are eligible. Students must have completed one year of journalism study to qualify.
How To Enter
A scholarship application form should be filled out completely and stapled to the front of a manila folder. Include in the folder: *Two letters of recommendation from people familiar with the applicant’s academic or professional work. The letters must be on letterhead stationery and limited to one page. *Not more than three writing samples. Broadcast students should submit a news script. *One page of typed, double-spaced copy, summarizing the applicant’s goals, interests, and accomplishments (if any to date) related to journalism and SPJ, as well as how and why interests developed.APPLICATIONS FOR 2011 SCHOLARSHIPS MUST BE RECEIVED BY APRIL 1, 2011
